The History of Recipes
Recipes as an idea can be traced way back into antiquity, in fact as far as pharonic Egypt, and quite possibly further than that. Interesting though that is, these, ancient recipes were just primitive hieroglyphic instructions for preparing meals.
During the time of the Romans a roman called Apicius compiled a number of documents showing how to cook the recipes prepared by wealthy roman citizens. In his works, he describes how the roman meals were separated into appetizers, main meal and dessert, a style of dining still practiced today. He also describes how the cooks of his times made use of many spices, including many that are still in use today such as basil, rue and parsley. Over the next few hundred years, the rich and powerful families of Wesstern Europe strove to lay on the most extravagent meals, and as a result the best chefs and their recipes were highly sought after. However, it was during the 19th century that haute cuisine and recipe collections became really popular. The Famous Mrs Isabella Beeton in the UK, and the equally famous Fannie Farmer in the US, dedicated years of their lives to collating, testing, and recording the recipes that were being prepared for the better households. The arrival of TV brings us celebrity TV chefs and the demand for the accompanying recipe books. And that neatly brings us to the present day and the internet revolution, allowing everyone to search through thousands of recipes like the ones you can find on this web site. |
