The History of Recipes

Experts have found proof that recipes existed far back into distant history, certainly as far as pharonic Egypt, and potentially, even further back. Interesting though that is, mostly, these ancient recipes were just very basic pictorial instructions for food preparation.

Interestingly, the oldest recipe in existence, according to academics are some tablets in Sumerian describing the preparation of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as having made anyone who tried it feel wonderful.

Closer to modern times, we find a couple of cookery books which were published in the fourteenth century : a cookery book titled `Forme of Cury`, and another titled `Curye on Inglish`. The titles are somewhat misleading tho`, they are not about the indian food that we all know today, but rather descriptions of the types of food enjoyed by the rich.

In the fifteenth century, people returning from the crusades brought back a variety of foods and herbs from Arab cooking, including spices like parsley, basil and rosemary. These new foods and tastes was responsible for a torrent in recipe manuscripts, the majority of which still exist in private collections.

During the succeeding few centuries, the powerful and rich competed to lay on the most extravagent meals, and as a consequence, the best chefs and their collection of recipes were at a premium. However, it was during the nineteenth century that haute cuisine and cookery books became really popular. The Famous Mrs Isabella Beeton in the UK, and the equally famous Fannie Merritt Farmer in the USA, dedicated their lives to collating, testing, and writing down the recipes that were being prepared for the better households.

Like it or not, the introduction of television gave us TV cooks and the demand for the accompanying recipe books.

And that pretty much brings us to the present day and the invention of the internet, permitting us all to search through thousands of recipes like the ones you can find on this recipe site.
