The History of Recipes

It is possible to trace the history of `recipes` far back into the distant past, in truth as far into history as early Egypt, and maybe even further. Interesting though that maybe, in the main part, these old records were just primitive pictorial instructions for food preparation.

The truth of the matter is, the most ancient recipe discovered, according to Professor Solomon Katz, are a few tablets in the Sumerian language which recount the making of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as making drinkers feel exhilarated and blissful.

Later, there were two interesting recipe books which were published in the 1300s - one book published under the title `Forme of Cury`, and another named `Curye on Inglish`. Although the titles sound familiar, these two books are nothing to do with the indian curry that appears on menues today, but instead accounts of the types of meals eaten by the rich people of that time.

Later, in the fifteenth century, people returning from the crusades brought us many new foods and herbs from the holy land, including spices such as coriander, parsley, and basil. The introduction of these new herbs and spices led to a surge in books on cookery, some of which are kept safe in private cookery archives.

During the following few hundred years, the upper classes tried to serve up the most extravagent meals, and consequentially chefs and their recipes were greatly in demand. Even so, it was during the 1800s that cookery and recipe publications became popular. The Famous Mrs Beeton in the UK, and the equally well-known Fannie Farmer in the USA, dedicated years of their lives to collating, verifying, and publishing recipes of the day.

By the time we get to the 1900s, cookery books are increasing in popularity mostly as a result of better eduction, leisure time and being a little richer.

The arrival of television gave us celebrity chefs and the demand for the accompanying recipe books.

And that pretty much brings us to the present day and the invention of computers and the internet, permitting everyone to search through thousands of recipes like those on the site you are now reading.
