The History of Recipes

Food historians have tracked the existance of recipes way back into distant history, at least as far back as pharonic Egypt, and maybe even further. Interesting though that maybe, sadly, these old recipes were just basic pictorial, hieroglyphic or cunieform instructions for food preparation.

Interestingly, the oldest recipe discovered, according to experts are a few stone tablets in Sumerian which describe the preparation of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as having made drinkers feel `wonderful`.

Later on, in Roman times 25BC a man called Apicius created a collection of scripts detailing recipes prepared by wealthy roman citizens. In his works, he recounts how the meals were split into appetizers, entrees and desserts, known in latin as `Gustatio, Primae Mensae and Secundae Mensae`. Aspicius also describes how the chefs of Roman times were skilled in the use of a wide range of spices, including a few you will know for example bay, mint and asafoetida.

In the fifteenth century, knights returning from the crusades brought us a variety of foods and spices from the holy land, including basil and rosemary. The introduction of these new culinary ideas created a surge in books on cooking, the majority of which are now in private libraries.

Like it or not, the introduction of television brought us TV cooks and the demand for the spin-off recipe books.

Which brings us neatly to the present day and the internet revolution, allowing everybody to access thousands of recipes just like those on this recipe site.
