The History of Recipes
Food historians have traced the existence of recipes back into distant history, in truth as far back into history as pharonic Egypt, and possibly even further. Interesting though that maybe, generally, these old recipes were just very simple hieroglyphic recipes for food preparation.
During Roman times 25BC a man called Apicius assembled a collection of scripts showing how to cook the recipes enjoyed by the Romans. In his works, he tells us how the roman meals were split into appetizers, entrees and desserts, a very modern way of dining. Additionally, he tells us how the ancient Romans were skilled in the use of a good variety of aromatic flavors, including some that we all recognise such as basil, rue and dill. Later, in the 15th century, the Crusaders brought back a variety of foods, spices and herbs from Arab countries, including spices like coriander, parsley, and rosemary. The introduction of these new tastes led to a surge in recipe books, most of which still exist in private collections. Like it or not, the introduction of TV brought us TV chefs and the accompanying recipe books. Which brings us neatly to the present day and the invention of computers and the internet, permitting everyone to access thousands of recipes such as those found on sites such as this. |
