The History of Recipes

Recipes as an idea can be observed far back into the far past, certainly as far back into recorded history as the early Egyptians, and possibly even further. However, in the main part, these early recipes were just primitive pictorial, hieroglyphic or cunieform instructions for preparing food.

As we move into The time of the roman empire around 25BC a roman called Apicius created a number of documents detailing recipes prepared by his fellow Romans. In his scrolls, Apicius recounts how the meals were separated into appetizers, main meal and afters, something that is very familiar to us today. This early Roman chef informs us how the ancient cooks used many different spices, including a few that are still present in modern kitchens like basil, mint and asafoetida.

For the decades that followed, the powerful and rich houses competed to lay on the most exotic banquets, and as a consequence, chefs and their collection of recipes became highly prized. Notwithstanding that, it was during the 19th century the formal cooking and recipe publications rose to prominence. Mrs Isabella Beeton in the UK, and the equally famous Fannie Farmer in the USA, devoted their lives to assembling, testing, and recording recipes to allow everyone to enjoy them.

The arrival of television gave us TV cooks and the accompanying recipe books.

Which brings us neatly up to date and the invention of the internet, allowing us all to access thousands of recipes like those on this web site.
