The History of Recipes
Written cooking instructions as an idea can be found far back into antiquity, in truth as far back into recorded history as ancient Egypt, and possibly even further than that. However, sadly, these early records were just basic pictorial recipes for preparing meals.
Fascinatingly, the most ancient recipe discovered, according to experts in ancient history is a series of ancient tablets in Sumerian which recount the preparation of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as making people feel blissful. As our culinary historical trip moves on a few more years there were some interesting books dating from the fourteenth century ; a book called `Forme of Cury`, and another, similary titled `Curye on Inglish`. Perhaps surprisingly, these two books have no connection with the indian food that we all know today, but instead descriptions of the types of food on the tables of the upper classes of that period. Over the following few hundred years, the rich and powerful families of the West strove to offer the best banquets, and consequentially the best chefs and their recipe collections increased in prestige. Nevertheless, it was during the 19th century that haute cuisine and recipe books became popular. Mrs Isabella Beeton in the UK, and the equally famous Fannie Farmer in the US, spent years to collating, trying out, and publishing recipes to allow everyone to enjoy them. The introduction of television gave us TV chefs and the spin-off recipe books. Which pretty much brings us to the present day and the invention of computers and the internet, allowing everyone to access thousands of recipes like the ones you can find on sites such as the one you are reading now. |
We hope you enjoy this Peppered Cheddar Dip recipe.
