The History of Recipes
We are able to follow the history of written recipes back into history, in truth as far into history as the ancient Egyptians, and potentially, even further back. However, these, early cookbooks were just very simple pictorial recipes for preparing food.
The truth of the matter is, the most ancient recipe discovered so far, according to food historians are a few clay tablets in Sumerian which describe the making of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as having made anyone who drank it feel exhilarated. As we move on, there are two interesting recipe books which date from the fourteenth century ; a book published under the title `Forme of Cury`, and another, similary named `Curye on Inglish`. Perhaps surprisingly, these are nothing to do with the curry that is served today, but instead recipes for the types of food prepared for the rich and powerful. During the following few hundred years, the wealthy families of Wesstern Europe tried to serve up the most exotic banquets, and because of this the best chefs and their recipe collections could command a high salary. Nevertheless, it wasn`t until the 1800s that formal cookery and cookery books became popular. The Famous Mrs Beeton in the UK, and the equally well-known Fannie Merritt Farmer in the USA, dedicated the best years of their lives to collecting, verifying, and writing down recipes that were common in the better off homes of the day. By the time we get to the 1900s, recipe publications are starting to become popular mostly due to higher levels of literacy, people having increased leisure time and having more money to spend. The arrival of television brought us celebrity TV chefs and the accompanying recipe books. Which brings us neatly up to date and the invention of the internet, permitting everybody to search through massive numbers of recipes like the ones you can find on this web site. |
