The History of Recipes
Experts have traced the existance of recipes way back into distant history, in fact as far back into recorded history as the ancient Egyptians, and maybe further still. Interesting though that is, in the main part, these early cookbooks were just very basic hieroglyphic or cunieform instructions for meal preparation.
Closer to modern times, there were a couple of books which date from the 14th Century : a cookery book published under the title `Forme of Cury`, and another, similary called `Curye on Inglish`. The titles are somewhat misleading tho`, these books are not about the spicy food that is familiar to us all today, but rather recipes for the types of food prepared by the chefs of the rich and powerful of the time. In the fifteenth century, knights returning from the crusades brought back many new spices and herbs from middle-east cuisine, including basil and rosemary. These new foods and tastes created a torrent in cookery books, most of which still exist in private collections. Like it or not, the introduction of television brings us celebrity TV chefs and the recipe books that accompanied them. Which pretty much brings us to the present day and the invention of the internet, permitting everyone to search through massive numbers of recipes like the ones you can find on this recipe site. |
