The History of Recipes
We can trace the history of meal recipes back into history, certainly as far back into recorded history as the Egypt of the Pharoahs, and maybe even further. However, generally, these early recipes were just simple hieroglyphic or cunieform recipes for food preparation.
In an interesting twist, the most ancient recipe discovered, according to historians are a few tablets in ancient Sumerian which describe the preparation of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as having made people feel exhilarated and blissful. Continuing our culinary historical journey, there are a couple of books dating from the 1300s : one book published under the title `Forme of Cury`, and another called `Curye on Inglish`. Despite their titles, these books are unconnected to the indian curry that is familiar to us all today, but rather recipes for the types of food cooked for the nobility of the period. Later on, in the 15th century, the Crusaders brought back a variety of spices and herbs from the holy lands, including spices such as parsley, basil and rosemary. The introduction of these new culinary ideas created a torrent in books on cookery, most of which are now in private libraries. Over the succeeding few centuries, the powerful families of Europe strove to serve the most exotic banquets, and consequentially chefs and their collection of recipes were greatly in demand. However, it wasn`t until the nineteenth century that cookery and recipe books became really popular. The Famous Mrs Isabella Beeton in the UK, and the equally famous Fannie Merritt Farmer in the USA, devoted their lives to assembling, verifying, and recording recipes of the day. When we get to the 20th century, recipe publications were greatly in demand mostly due to better eduction, more spare time and having more money. The TV revolution brought us TV chefs and the accompanying recipe books. And that pretty much brings us to the present day and the internet revolution, permitting us all to access thousands of recipes just like those on the site you are now reading. |
