The History of Recipes
We are able to track the history of meal recipes way back into antiquity, in truth as far back into history as the Egypt of the Pharoahs, and possibly even further. Having said that, these, old cookbooks were just simple hieroglyphic instructions for preparing food.
The truth of the matter is, the most ancient recipe discovered so far, according to academics are some ancient tablets in ancient Sumerian describing the making of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as making people feel blissful. Later on, in The time of the roman empire around 25BC a roman called Apicius compiled a number of documents which described recipes enjoyed by the Romans. In his works, Apicius tells us how the meals of wealthy Romans were split into hors d`oeuvres, main meal and desserts, a style of dining still practiced today. He also tells us how the chefs of Roman times made use of a wide range of spices, including some familiar names for example basil, fennel and parsley. Later, in the fifteenth century, people returning from the crusades brought us many new foods and spices from middle-east cuisine, such as parsley and basil. These new culinary innovations caused an eruption in books on cookery, many of which are now in academic collections. By the time we get to the 1900s, cookery books were increasing in popularity as a result of higher levels of literacy, more free time and having more disposable income. The arrival of television brings us celebrity chefs and the demand for the spin-off recipe books. And that neatly brings us to the present day and the invention of computers and the internet, allowing everybody to search through massive numbers of recipes just like those on this web site. |
