The History of Recipes

We are able to trace the history of `recipes` far back into history, certainly as far back as the ancient Egyptians, and possibly even further than that. Having said that, generally, these ancient cook books were just simple pictorial, hieroglyphic or cunieform recipes for food preparation.

The truth of the matter is, the oldest recipe in existence, according to experts in ancient history are some stone tablets in the Sumerian language which show the preparation of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as having made those who drank it feel exhilarated and blissful.

As we move on, we find a couple of interesting recipe books which date from the 14th Century : a book titled `Forme of Cury`, and another, similary named `Curye on Inglish`. Perhaps surprisingly, these are not about the indian food that we all know today, but rather accounts of the types of meals on the tables of the rich and wealthy people of that time.

During the next few centuries, the powerful and rich houses competed with each other to lay on the most exotic meals, and as a consequence, cooks and their collection of recipes increased in prestige. Nevertheless, it wasn`t until the nineteenth century that haute cuisine and recipe books rose to prominence. Mrs Isabella Beeton in the UK, and the equally famous Fannie Farmer in the USA, devoted much of their lives to collating, trying out, and recording recipes to help cooks of their time.

By the advent of the 20th century, cook books were in high demand, mostly due to more people being able to read, people having more free time and a general increase in wealth.

The revolution that is television gave us cooking programs and the recipe books that accompanied them.

Which brings us neatly to the present day and the invention of the internet, allowing us all to access massive numbers of recipes like those on sites such as the one you are reading now.
