The History of Recipes

Experts have found proof that recipes existed back into distant history, in fact as far into history as the ancient Egyptians, and possibly even further. Interesting though that is, these, old cook books were just simple pictorial, hieroglyphic or cunieform recipes for preparing meals.

Interestingly, the most ancient recipe in existence, according to food historians are some clay tablets in the Sumerian language describing the preparation of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as having made anyone who tried it feel `wonderful`.

Closer to modern times, we have some books which date from the 1300s ; a cookery book titled `Forme of Cury`, and another called `Curye on Inglish`. Despite their titles, these have no connection with the indian food that appears on menues today, but instead accounts of the types of meals prepared by the cooks of the nobility of the time.

In the fifteenth century, knights returning from the crusades brought us a variety of spices and herbs from Arab countries, including spices such as rosemary and coriander. The introduction of these new culinary ideas prompted an explosion in recipe manuscripts, some of which are now in private cookery archives.

During the succeeding few centuries, the wealthy families of Europe strove to serve up the most exotic banquets, and as a consequence, chefs and their recipe collections could command a high salary. However, it wasn`t until the 19th century that fine cookery and recipe publications rose to prominence. Mrs Isabella Beeton in the UK, and the equally famous Fannie Farmer in the US, devoted much of their lives to collating, verifying, and writing down recipes that were common in the better off homes of the day.

By the arrival of the 1900s, recipe books were greatly in demand mostly due to more people being able to read, more spare time and having more money to spend.

Like it or not, the introduction of television brought us TV chefs and the accompanying recipe books.

Which pretty much brings us to the present day and the invention of the internet, allowing everyone to access massive numbers of recipes like the ones you can find on our site.
