The History of Recipes
Written cooking instructions as a concept can be tracked far back into the distant past, in fact as far back into recorded history as pharonic Egypt, and quite possibly further than that. Having said that, mostly, these early recipes were just simple pictorial, hieroglyphic or cunieform recipes for preparing food.
Moving our culinary historical trip onwards, there were a couple of books which were published in the fourteenth century ; a cookery book called `Forme of Cury`, and another named `Curye on Inglish`. Don`t be fooled by the titles though, these books are nothing to do with the indian food that we all know today, but instead descriptions of the types of meals enjoyed by the nobility of those days. Later on, in the 15th century, people returning from the crusades brought us a variety of foods and herbs from the holy lands, including spices like rosemary and coriander. The introduction of these new foods and spices caused a surge in publications on food, the majority of which are now in private collections. The TV revolution gave us TV chefs and the demand for the accompanying recipe books. Which brings us neatly to the present day and the invention of computers and the internet, allowing everybody to access thousands of recipes like those on our web site. |
