The History of Recipes
It is possible to read the history of meal recipes far back into ancient history, at least as far as ancient Egypt, and maybe even further. However, sadly, these old recipes were just simple pictorial instructions for meal preparation.
The truth of the matter is, the most ancient recipe found, according to Professor Solomon Katz, is a series of tablets in the Sumerian language which recount the baking of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as making people feel wonderful and blissful. As we move into Roman times 25BC a man called Apicius assembled some documents showing how to cook the recipes prepared by his fellow Romans. In his publication, Apicius tells us how the roman meals were split into appetizers, entrees and desserts, known in latin as `Gustatio, Primae Mensae and Secundae Mensae`. He also describes how the early Romans used a wide range of herbs, including some that we all recognise like basil, fennel and parsley. Later, in the 15th century, the Crusaders brought back many new foods and herbs from the East, including coriander, parsley, and rosemary. These new culinary innovations created a surge in recipe books, the majority of which still exist in academic collections. The revolution that is television brought us celebrity TV chefs and the demand for the accompanying recipe books. And that neatly brings us to the present day and the internet revolution, permitting everybody to search through thousands of recipes just like those on the site you are now reading. |
We hope you enjoy this Phaalse Ka Sharbat (Blackberry Downpour) recipe.
