The History of Recipes
It is possible to read the history of `recipes` far back into distant history, at least as far back into recorded history as the Egyptians, and possibly even further than that. Interesting though that is, generally, these old records were just very basic hieroglyphic instructions for meal preparation.
The truth of the matter is, the most ancient recipe found, according to Professor Solomon Katz, is a collection of ancient tablets in ancient Sumerian which describe the making of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as having made anyone who drank it feel `exhilarated, wonderful and blissful`. As we move into The time of the romans around 25BC a roman called Apicius compiled a number of documents which described recipes prepared by wealthy Romans. In his publication, Apicius describes how the roman meals were divided into hors d`oeuvres, main meal and dessert, a style of dining still practiced today. Additionally, he informs us how the ancient chefs made use of a good variety of herbs, including many that are still in use today like bay, mint and asafoetida. Later, in the fifteenth century, people returning from the crusades brought us many new foods and spices from the East, including coriander, basil and rosemary. These new herbs and spices caused an explosion in manuscripts on food, many of which are now in private cookery archives. The revolution that is television brings us celebrity chefs and the demand for the accompanying recipe books. Which pretty much brings us up to date and the invention of the internet, permitting us all to search through massive numbers of recipes such as those found on the site you are now reading. |
We hope you enjoy this Philadelphia Apple Pie recipe.
