The History of Recipes
Academics have found proof that recipes existed way back into ancient history, in truth as far back into history as the Egypt of the Pharoahs, and potentially, even further back. However, sadly, these old recipes were just simple pictorial, hieroglyphic or cunieform instructions for meal preparation.
Interestingly, the most ancient recipe discovered, according to experts is a collection of clay tablets in ancient Sumerian which recount the baking of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as making anyone who drank it feel `exhilarated, wonderful and blissful`. Closer to modern times, we have a couple of interesting cookery books published in the fourteenth century : a recipe book entitled `Forme of Cury`, and another entitled `Curye on Inglish`. The titles are somewhat misleading tho`, these are not about the spicy food that is served today, but rather recipes for the types of meals eaten by the upper classes. For the decades that followed, the powerful and rich tried to lay on the best banquets, and as a consequence, chefs and their collection of recipes were much in demand. However, it wasn`t until the nineteenth century the formal cooking and cookery books became really popular. Mrs Beeton in the UK, and the equally well-known Fannie Merritt Farmer in the USA, spent years to assembling, testing, and writing down recipes of the day. By the time we get to the 1900s, cookbooks are increasing in popularity due to more people being able to read, increased leisure time and having more money. The arrival of television gave us celebrity chefs and the spin-off recipe books. Which brings us neatly to the present day and the invention of computers and the internet, permitting everybody to access thousands of recipes like those on this web site. |
We hope you enjoy this Philippine Chicken recipe.
