The History of Recipes

It is quite feasible to prove the history of transcribed cooking instructions way back into ancient history, at least as far into history as ancient Egypt, and maybe even further. However, generally, these old cookbooks were just basic pictorial instructions for meal preparation.

In fact, the oldest recipe discovered so far, according to academics are some clay tablets in Sumerian which show the making of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as having made anyone who tried it feel blissful.

Later on, we have some recipe books which date from the 1300s : a cookery book titled `Forme of Cury`, and another, similary named `Curye on Inglish`. Surprisingly, these books are not about the curry that is popular today, but rather recipes for the types of meals prepared by the cooks of the upper classes.

Later on in the 1400s, knights returning from the crusades brought us many spices and herbs from Arab cuisine, including spices such as basil and rosemary. These new foods and spices caused a torrent in manuscripts on cooking, many of which still exist in private libraries.

For the centuries that followed, the rich families of Europe competed to offer the most exotic meals, and because of this chefs and their collection of recipes were much in demand. Nevertheless, it wasn`t until the nineteenth century that formal cookery and recipe collections really came of age. Mrs Isabella Beeton in the UK, and the equally well-known Fannie Farmer in the US, devoted their lives to assembling, trying out, and recording recipes of the day.

The introduction of the TV brought us TV cookery programs and the recipe books that accompanied them.

Which pretty much brings us to the present day and the internet revolution, permitting us all to access thousands of recipes like those on our site.
