The History of Recipes
It is actually possible to trace the history of recipes back into history, certainly as far back as the Egyptians, and possibly even further than that. Interesting though that is, sadly, these early cook books were just primitive pictorial, hieroglyphic or cunieform recipes for meal preparation.
The truth of the matter is, the oldest recipe in existence, according to academics are some ancient tablets in ancient Sumerian which recount the preparation of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as making drinkers feel wonderful. As we move on, there are a couple of interesting recipe books from the 14th Century - a cookery book titled `Forme of Cury`, and another, similary entitled `Curye on Inglish`. The titles are somewhat misleading tho`, they have no connection with the curry that is served today, but rather recipes for the types of meals eaten by the rich and wealthy people of those days. Later, in the fifteenth century, the Crusaders brought back many foods, spices and herbs from Arab countries, such as coriander, parsley, and basil. These new foods and tastes was responsible for an explosion in manuscripts on food, the majority of which still exist in private libraries. During the next few centuries, the wealthy families of the West competed with each other to lay on the best banquets, and as a consequence, cooks and their recipes were much in demand. However, it was during the 19th century that formal cookery and cookery books became really popular. The Famous Mrs Beeton in the UK, and the equally famous Fannie Farmer in the USA, spent years to collecting, testing, and publishing recipes that were common in the better off homes of the day. By the advent of the 20th century, cooking books were in high demand, due to more people being able to read, people having more free time and having more disposable income. The revolution that is television brought us cooking programs and the spin-off recipe books. Which brings us neatly up to date and the internet revolution, allowing everyone to access thousands of recipes such as those found on this web site. |
