The History of Recipes

Recipes as an idea can be found way back into ancient history, in fact as far back as the Egyptians, and possibly even further. However, these, early recipes were just primitive hieroglyphic or cunieform recipes for preparing meals.

In an interesting twist, the most ancient recipe in existence, according to academics is a collection of stone tablets in Sumerian which show the preparation of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as making anyone who tried it feel exhilarated and blissful.

Later on, in The time of the romans 25BC a man called Apicius created a collection of scripts showing how to cook the recipes cooked by the Romans. In his works, Apicius tells us how the meals were separated into hors d`oeuvre, main course and dessert, a style of dining still practiced today. This early Roman chef tells us how the cooks of Roman times were skilled in the use of many different herbs, including a few that will be familiar to modern cooks for example thyme, fennel and dill.

Later on, in the 15th century, knights returning from the crusades brought us a variety of foods, spices and herbs from Arab cooking, including spices such as parsley and basil. The introduction of these new foods and spices prompted an increase in recipe manuscripts, many of which are now in private collections.

Over the succeeding few centuries, the rich families of Europe strove to offer the best banquets, and as a consequence, chefs and their recipe collections were much in demand. Nevertheless, it wasn`t until the nineteenth century that haute cuisine and recipe collections rose to prominence. The Famous Mrs Beeton in the UK, and Fannie Farmer in the US, spent years to assembling, verifying, and publishing the recipes of their peers.

The arrival of TV brought us TV chefs and the spin-off recipe books.

And that brings us to the present day and the invention of computers and the internet, allowing everybody to access thousands of recipes like those on the site you are now reading.
