The History of Recipes

Academics have proved the existance of recipes far back into distant history, certainly as far back into recorded history as the Egypt of the Pharoahs, and maybe further still. Interesting though that maybe, generally, these ancient cookbooks were just very basic hieroglyphic instructions for preparing meals.

Fascinatingly, the oldest recipe discovered, according to academics is a series of clay tablets in ancient Sumerian which show the making of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as having made drinkers feel exhilarated and blissful.

During the time of the Roman Empire a roman called Apicius created some scripts detailing recipes enjoyed by wealthy Romans. In his publication, he describes how the meals were separated into hors d`oeuvres, main meal and dessert, something that is very familiar to us today. Aspicius also describes how the ancient cooks made use of a good variety of aromatic flavors, including some that we all recognise for example thyme, rue and dill.

Over the following few hundred years, the powerful and rich competed to serve the most extravagent banquests, and consequentially the best cooks and their recipe collections were at a premium. Even so, it wasn`t until the 19th century that haute cuisine and recipe publications became really popular. Mrs Beeton in the UK, and the equally famous Fannie Farmer in the USA, dedicated the best years of their lives to collecting, trying out, and writing down recipes of the day.

By the arrival of the 20th century, cookbooks are highly popular as a result of better eduction, more leisure time and having more disposable income.

The introduction of television gave us TV cooks and the demand for the spin-off recipe books.

Which brings us neatly to the present day and the invention of computers and the internet, allowing us all to search through massive numbers of recipes such as those found on sites such as this.
