The History of Recipes
It is quite possible to trace the history of transcribed cooking instructions far back into the distant past, in truth as far into history as ancient Egypt, and possibly even further than that. Interesting though that maybe, generally, these ancient cook books were just very basic hieroglyphic or cunieform instructions for preparing food.
The truth of the matter is, the most ancient recipe found, according to experts in ancient history are some ancient tablets in the Sumerian language which describe the preparation of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as making anyone who drank it feel exhilarated. Progressing into The time of the romans around 25BC a roman called Apicius created a few scripts which described recipes enjoyed by his fellow Romans. In his publication, he describes how the meals were separated into hors d`oeuvres, main course and afters, something that is very familiar to us today. He also describes how the chefs of Roman times used a wide range of spices and herbs, including a few you will know like bay, mint and asafoetida. During the following few centuries, the families of Europe tried to serve up the most exotic meals, and as a result cooks and their collection of recipes could command a high salary. Even so, it wasn`t until the nineteenth century the formal cooking and recipe publications rose to prominence. The Famous Mrs Isabella Beeton in the UK, and Fannie Merritt Farmer in the US, devoted their lives to assembling, testing, and publishing recipes to help cooks of their time. Like it or not, the introduction of TV gave us celebrity chefs and the recipe books that accompanied them. And that neatly brings us to the present day and the internet revolution, allowing everyone to access thousands of recipes just like those on this recipe site. |
