The History of Recipes
It is quite possible to track the history of transcribed cooking instructions back into the far past, certainly as far into history as pharonic Egypt, and maybe even further. Interesting though that maybe, in the main part, these early cookbooks were just very basic hieroglyphic recipes for meal preparation.
Progressing into The time of the romans around 25BC a man called Apicius created a number of scripts describing recipes cooked by the Romans. In his publication, he tells us how the roman meals were split into hors d`oeuvre, entrees and desserts, known in latin as `Gustatio, Primae Mensae and Secundae Mensae`. This early Roman chef describes how the ancient cooks used a good variety of herbs, including many that are still in use today for example basil, fennel and dill. Later, in the 15th century, knights returning from the crusades brought us many foods and spices from Arab cooking, including spices such as coriander, basil and rosemary. These new spices and herbs prompted a surge in books on cookery, the majority of which still exist in private libraries. Like it or not, the introduction of TV brings us cooking programs and the demand for the spin-off recipe books. Which brings us neatly up to date and the invention of computers and the internet, allowing us all to access thousands of recipes such as those found on the site you are now reading. |
