The History of Recipes
Academics have proved the existence of recipes way back into antiquity, in fact as far as the Egypt of the Pharoahs, and possibly even further. However, these, ancient records were just basic pictorial recipes for food preparation.
As we move into The time of the roman empire 25BC a roman called Apicius compiled a number of documents showing how to cook the recipes prepared by wealthy Romans. In his works, Apicius tells us how the meals of wealthy Romans were separated into starters, entrees and desserts, known in latin as `Gustatio, Primae Mensae and Secundae Mensae`. Aspicius also informs us how the Roman chefs used a wide range of spices, including some familiar names like bay, fennel and parsley. Over the next few centuries, the rich and powerful families of Wesstern Europe strove to lay on the most extravagent banquests, and because of this cooks and their collection of recipes were at a premium. Nevertheless, it was during the 1800s that cookery and cookery books rose to prominence. Mrs Isabella Beeton in the UK, and the equally famous Fannie Merritt Farmer in the US, devoted their lives to assembling, testing, and writing down recipes to help cooks of their time. The introduction of television brings us celebrity TV chefs and the demand for the spin-off recipe books. Which pretty much brings us to the present day and the invention of the internet, allowing us all to access thousands of recipes just like those on this web site. |
