The History of Recipes

Written cooking instructions as an idea can be traced back into the far past, certainly as far back as the Egyptians, and maybe further still. However, sadly, these ancient cookbooks were just very basic pictorial, hieroglyphic or cunieform instructions for meal preparation.

Fascinatingly, the oldest recipe discovered so far, according to experts are some stone tablets in Sumerian which show the baking of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as having made people feel wonderful.

Moving our culinary historical trip onwards, we have a couple of interesting recipe books from the 14th Century ; a recipe book titled `Forme of Cury`, and another, similary titled `Curye on Inglish`. Surprisingly, these are nothing to do with the curry that appears on menues today, but instead descriptions of the types of meals on the menus of the nobility of that time.

Over the following few centuries, the rich families of Wesstern Europe competed with each other to serve the best banquets, and because of this the best cooks and their recipe collections became highly prized. Nevertheless, it wasn`t until the 1800s that cooking and recipe publications became popular. Mrs Beeton in the UK, and the equally famous Fannie Farmer in the USA, dedicated their lives to collecting, verifying, and recording the recipes that were being prepared for the better households.

When we get to the 1900s, cooking publications are in high demand, due to higher levels of literacy, more leisure time and disposable income.

The arrival of TV brings us cooking programs and the spin-off recipe books.

Which pretty much brings us up to date and the invention of computers and the internet, allowing us all to search through thousands of recipes such as those found on our web site.
