The History of Recipes
Food historians have tracked the existance of recipes back into the distant past, in fact as far back into recorded history as early Egypt, and quite possibly further than that. In practice though, mostly, these ancient records were just simple pictorial, hieroglyphic or cunieform recipes for preparing meals.
As our culinary historical trip moves on a few more years there are a couple of books which appeared in the fourteenth century ; a book published under the title `Forme of Cury`, and another, similary entitled `Curye on Inglish`. The titles are a little misleading though, these books are not about the indian food that is popular today, but rather recipes for the types of meals prepared by the chefs of the rich and powerful. In the fifteenth century, the Crusaders brought back a variety of foods and herbs from middle-east cuisine, including spices like basil and coriander. The introduction of these new tastes caused an increase in publications on food, many of which still exist in private libraries. Like it or not, the introduction of television brought us TV chefs and the recipe books that accompanied them. And that brings us to the present day and the invention of the internet, permitting everyone to search through massive numbers of recipes like those on our web site. |
We hope you enjoy this Poor Man's Perogies recipe.
