The History of Recipes
Recipes as an idea can be observed way back into distant history, certainly as far as the ancient Egyptians, and possibly even further than that. Interesting though that is, these, ancient cook books were just very simple hieroglyphic or cunieform instructions for preparing meals.
Later on, in The time of the roman empire around 25BC a roman called Apicius created some scripts which described recipes cooked by wealthy roman citizens. In his works, Apicius recounts how the roman meals were separated into starters, entrees and afters, a style of dining still practiced today. Aspicius also informs us how the ancient Romans made use of many herbs and spices, including many that are still in use today such as thyme, mint and parsley. Later, in the fifteenth century, people returning from the crusades brought back many new foods, spices and herbs from the Middle-East, such as parsley and basil. These new spices and herbs was responsible for a surge in manuscripts on cooking, many of which are kept safe in private libraries. The revolution that is television gave us celebrity TV chefs and the spin-off recipe books. Which pretty much brings us to the present day and the invention of the internet, permitting everyone to search through thousands of recipes like the ones you can find on our web site. |
