The History of Recipes
Experts have found proof that recipes existed far back into ancient history, at least as far as the Egyptians, and possibly even further. Interesting though that maybe, in the main part, these ancient cook books were just basic hieroglyphic recipes for preparing meals.
The truth of the matter is, the oldest recipe discovered so far, according to food historians are a few ancient tablets in ancient Sumerian which recount the making of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as having made drinkers feel `blissful`. Moving on, we find a couple of recipe books which appeared in the 14th Century ; a book published under the title `Forme of Cury`, and another entitled `Curye on Inglish`. Don`t be fooled by the titles though, these are nothing to do with the indian curry that is popular today, but instead recipes for the types of meals enjoyed by the upper classes of the time. During the following few centuries, the powerful and rich competed to serve up the most exotic meals, and because of this cooks and their recipe collections could command a high salary. Notwithstanding that, it wasn`t until the 1800s that cookery and recipe collections reached a high level of popularity. The Famous Mrs Beeton in the UK, and the equally famous Fannie Merritt Farmer in the US, devoted much of their lives to assembling, verifying, and recording recipes for their fellow cooks to enjoy. By the advent of the 1900s, cookbooks are highly popular mostly as a result of higher levels of literacy, people having more free time and having more money to spend. |
