The History of Recipes
Written recipes as an idea can be traced way back into ancient history, in fact as far back into history as the Egyptians, and possibly even further than that. Having said that, these, early records were just very simple hieroglyphic instructions for food preparation.
Later on, in The time of the romans 25BC a man called Apicius created a collection of scripts showing how to cook the recipes enjoyed by wealthy roman citizens. He tells us how the roman meals were divided into hors d`oeuvres, main course and dessert, something that is very familiar to us today. Aspicius also recounts how the early Romans used a wide range of aromatic flavours, including a few that will be familiar to modern chefs like thyme, mint and parsley. Over the succeeding few centuries, the rich families of Europe strove to serve the best banquets, and as a consequence, cooks and their recipe collections were at a premium. Notwithstanding that, it wasn`t until the nineteenth century that formal cookery and recipe publications rose to prominence. Mrs Isabella Beeton in the UK, and the equally well-known Fannie Merritt Farmer in the USA, dedicated their lives to assembling, trying out, and publishing recipes to help cooks of their time. The TV revolution brought us TV chefs and the spin-off recipe books. Which pretty much brings us to the present day and the internet revolution, permitting everybody to search through thousands of recipes just like those on our site. |
