The History of Recipes
It is actually possible to track the history of recipes far back into distant history, in truth as far back as the Egypt of the Pharoahs, and potentially, even further back. Interesting though that is, in the main part, these ancient recipes were just very basic pictorial, hieroglyphic or cunieform recipes for food preparation.
The truth of the matter is, the most ancient recipe found, according to experts are some ancient tablets in the Sumerian language describing the preparation of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as having made drinkers feel wonderful. Moving on, we find two books published in the fourteenth century : a recipe book titled `Forme of Cury`, and another called `Curye on Inglish`. The titles are somewhat misleading tho`, these have no connection with the indian curry that is familiar to us all today, but instead descriptions of the types of meals enjoyed by the upper classes of the period. During the following few centuries, the powerful and rich tried to offer the most extravagent banquests, and as a result the best chefs and their collection of recipes became highly prized. However, it wasn`t until the 19th century that fine cooking and recipe books became popular. The Famous Mrs Beeton in the UK, and the equally famous Fannie Farmer in the US, devoted their lives to collating, trying out, and publishing popular recipes of the day. The revolution that is television gave us celebrity TV chefs and the demand for the spin-off recipe books. Which brings us neatly up to date and the invention of the internet, allowing everyone to access thousands of recipes like the ones you can find on our site. |
