The History of Recipes
We can read the history of `recipes` far back into the far past, in fact as far as the ancient Egyptians, and maybe further still. Interesting though that maybe, generally, these old cookbooks were just very simple hieroglyphic or cunieform instructions for preparing meals.
Later on, in Roman times around 25BC a man called Apicius compiled a few scripts showing how to cook the recipes enjoyed by the Romans. He tells us how the roman meals were divided into appetizers, main meal and dessert, a style of dining still practiced today. Aspicius also informs us how the cooks of his times made use of a wide range of aromatic flavors, including a few that will be familiar to modern cooks like thyme, fennel and dill. Later on in the 1400s, knights returning from the crusades brought us a variety of foods and spices from the holy lands, including basil and coriander. These new culinary innovations led to an eruption in recipe publications, many of which still exist in private collections. By the advent of the twentieth century, recipe publications are greatly in demand as a result of better eduction, people having more leisure time and having more money. |
