The History of Recipes
We can read the history of `recipes` way back into the distant past, certainly as far into history as the ancient Egyptians, and possibly even further. Interesting though that maybe, these, ancient cook books were just very basic hieroglyphic or cunieform instructions for preparing food.
In fact, the oldest recipe discovered so far, according to food historians are some tablets in ancient Sumerian which recount the baking of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as making drinkers feel exhilarated. Later on, in Roman times around 25BC a man called Apicius assembled a number of documents describing recipes cooked by the Romans. In his publication, Apicius recounts how the meals were divided into starters, entrees and dessert, a style of dining still practiced today. He also tells us how the Romans were skilled in the use of many different spices and herbs, including a few you will know for example basil, rue and asafoetida. Later on in the 1400s, the Crusaders brought back many spices and herbs from Arab cuisine, such as rosemary and coriander. The introduction of these new herbs and spices was responsible for a surge in publications on food, many of which are kept safe in private libraries. The introduction of the TV brought us cooking programs and the accompanying recipe books. And that pretty much brings us to the present day and the invention of computers and the internet, permitting everybody to access massive numbers of recipes like those on this site. |
