The History of Recipes
We are able to track the history of `recipes` far back into the distant past, certainly as far back into recorded history as pharonic Egypt, and potentially, even further back. Interesting though that is, mostly, these early cookbooks were just primitive pictorial, hieroglyphic or cunieform instructions for meal preparation.
As we move into The time of the romans around 25BC a roman called Apicius created a few documents detailing recipes prepared by the Romans. In his scrolls, he describes how the meals of wealthy Romans were separated into hors d`oeuvres, main course and dessert, something we still use today. Additionally, he describes how the Romans made use of many different spices, including many that are still in use today such as thyme, fennel and asafoetida. During the next few centuries, the upper classes competed to lay on the most extravagent meals, and as a consequence, the best chefs and their collection of recipes were much in demand. However, it wasn`t until the nineteenth century that haute cuisine and recipe books became really popular. Mrs Beeton in the UK, and the equally well-known Fannie Merritt Farmer in the US, dedicated the best years of their lives to collating, testing, and recording recipes for their fellow cooks to enjoy. The revolution that is television gave us TV cooks and the demand for the accompanying recipe books. Which pretty much brings us up to date and the internet revolution, permitting everybody to search through massive numbers of recipes like those on this web site. |
We hope you enjoy this Pork Cake recipe.
