The History of Recipes

Transcribed cooking instructions as a concept can be traced back into antiquity, in truth as far back as early Egypt, and possibly even further than that. In practice though, mostly, these early recipes were just simple hieroglyphic instructions for preparing meals.

In an interesting twist, the most ancient recipe in existence, according to experts in ancient history is a series of clay tablets in the Sumerian language describing the making of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as having made anyone who tried it feel wonderful and blissful.

Moving our culinary historical trip onwards, there are two interesting recipe books which appeared in the 14th Century - a book called `Forme of Cury`, and another called `Curye on Inglish`. The titles are a little misleading though, these books are nothing to do with the indian food that we all know today, but instead accounts of the types of food prepared for the nobility of those days.

Over the next few hundred years, the powerful families of Europe tried to offer the most extravagent meals, and as a consequence, cooks and their recipes increased in prestige. Notwithstanding that, it wasn`t until the 1800s that fine cookery and recipe books reached a high level of popularity. The Famous Mrs Beeton in the UK, and the equally well-known Fannie Farmer in the US, dedicated the best years of their lives to collecting, verifying, and recording recipes common in their social group.

When we get to the 20th century, recipe publications were starting to become popular mostly as a result of more people being able to read, more free time and a general increase in wealth.

The arrival of TV brought us celebrity TV chefs and the demand for the accompanying recipe books.

And that brings us to the present day and the invention of the internet, permitting everyone to search through massive numbers of recipes such as those found on the site you are now reading.
