The History of Recipes
It is possible to track the history of `recipes` back into the far past, certainly as far back into history as early Egypt, and possibly even further than that. Interesting though that is, these, ancient records were just primitive hieroglyphic recipes for meal preparation.
In fact, the oldest recipe in existence, according to historians is a collection of ancient tablets in Sumerian which describe the making of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as having made anyone who drank it feel blissful and exhilarated. Later on, in The time of the roman empire 25BC a man called Apicius created a few documents detailing recipes enjoyed by wealthy roman citizens. In his scrolls, he recounts how the meals of wealthy Romans were divided into starters, main course and dessert, known in latin as `Gustatio, Primae Mensae and Secundae Mensae`. Additionally, he describes how the Roman chefs were skilled in the use of a good variety of spices and herbs, including a few you will know for example basil, rue and dill. Later, in the fifteenth century, knights returning from the crusades brought us a variety of foods and herbs from Arab cooking, such as basil and rosemary. The introduction of these new culinary ideas was responsible for an increase in recipe publications, the majority of which still exist in private libraries. By the time we get to the 1900s, cooking publications are highly popular mostly as a result of more people being able to read, people having more spare time and having more money. The arrival of television brings us TV cooks and the recipe books that accompanied them. Which pretty much brings us up to date and the invention of computers and the internet, allowing us all to access massive numbers of recipes such as those found on this site. |
