The History of Recipes
Historians have proved the existance of recipes way back into the distant past, in fact as far as the ancient Egyptians, and possibly even further. However, in the main part, these early cookbooks were just simple pictorial, hieroglyphic or cunieform instructions for food preparation.
Interestingly, the most ancient recipe discovered, according to academics are a few tablets in the Sumerian language which show the baking of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as making people feel blissful. As our culinary historical trip moves on a few more years there are two books dating from the 1300s ; a cookery book published under the title `Forme of Cury`, and another called `Curye on Inglish`. Surprisingly, these books are not about the spicy food that is familiar to us all today, but rather recipes for the types of food prepared by the chefs of the wealthy. In the fifteenth century, the Crusaders brought back many new spices and herbs from the holy lands, such as basil and coriander. These new herbs and spices caused a torrent in cookery books, most of which are now in private libraries. During the succeeding few hundred years, the powerful families of the West strove to lay on the most exotic banquets, and consequentially cooks and their recipe collections were at a premium. Nevertheless, it wasn`t until the nineteenth century the formal cooking and recipe books became really popular. The Famous Mrs Beeton in the UK, and the equally well-known Fannie Farmer in the USA, dedicated the best years of their lives to collating, testing, and recording recipes common in their social group. Like it or not, the introduction of television brought us celebrity TV chefs and the accompanying recipe books. Which brings us neatly up to date and the invention of computers and the internet, permitting everyone to search through massive numbers of recipes like the ones you can find on this recipe site. |
