The History of Recipes
Food historians have tracked the existance of recipes way back into the far past, in fact as far into history as the ancient Egyptians, and quite possibly further than that. However, mostly, these ancient recipes were just simple pictorial recipes for preparing food.
Interestingly, the most ancient recipe discovered so far, according to food historians are a few stone tablets in the Sumerian language which recount the baking of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as making drinkers feel `wonderful`. During Roman times around 25BC a roman called Apicius assembled a collection of documents showing how to cook the recipes enjoyed by his fellow Romans. In his scrolls, Apicius describes how the roman meals were split into starters, entrees and dessert, a very modern way of dining. He also tells us how the cooks of his times used many aromatic flavours, including a few that will be familiar to modern cooks for example bay, mint and asafoetida. In the fifteenth century, knights returning from the crusades brought back a variety of spices and herbs from middle-east cuisine, including spices like parsley and basil. These new herbs and spices led to an outbreak in publications on food, most of which are kept safe in academic collections. Like it or not, the introduction of television brings us TV chefs and the accompanying recipe books. And that neatly brings us to the present day and the invention of computers and the internet, allowing everyone to search through thousands of recipes like the ones you can find on our site. |
