The History of Recipes
Recipes as an idea can be observed way back into history, at least as far back as the early Egyptians, and possibly even further than that. Interesting though that maybe, sadly, these old recipes were just basic pictorial instructions for meal preparation.
In an interesting twist, the oldest recipe in existence, according to experts is a series of clay tablets in ancient Sumerian which recount the preparation of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as making anyone who tried it feel blissful. As we move into The time of the roman empire around 25BC a roman called Apicius compiled a collection of scripts detailing recipes cooked by wealthy Romans. In his scrolls, Apicius describes how the roman meals were separated into hors d`oeuvre, main meal and afters, known in latin as `Gustatio, Primae Mensae and Secundae Mensae`. Additionally, he tells us how the ancient Romans were skilled in the use of a good variety of spices and herbs, including some familiar names such as bay, fennel and parsley. In the 15th century, knights returning from the crusades brought back many foods, spices and herbs from Arab countries, such as coriander, parsley, and rosemary. These new spices and herbs prompted an explosion in manuscripts on cookery, the majority of which still exist in private cookery archives. The arrival of TV brings us TV cookery programs and the accompanying recipe books. Which pretty much brings us up to date and the invention of computers and the internet, permitting everyone to access massive numbers of recipes such as those found on this recipe site. |
