Ingredients
5 sweet potatoes,medium,peeled
1 salt to taste
1/3 cup honey
1/2 cup water
2 tbsp butter or margarine
6 apples
1 pepper to taste
1/4 cup soy sauce
6 pork chops
Directions
1. Cut sweet potatoes into 1/2-inch slices.
2. Core apples but do not peel; cut into 1/2-inch rings.
3. Arrange sweet potato slices over the bottom of a greased
13x9x2-inch casserole or baking pan.
4. Put half the apple rings on top of sweet potatoes, saving the
other half to use on top with pork chops.
5. Season with salt and pepper to taste.
6. Mix together honey, soy sauce and water; pour over sweet potatoes
and apples.
7. Bake in preheated 350'F. oven 30 minutes.
8. Season pork chops with salt and pepper; brown in a skillet in 1/2
tablespoon margarine.
9. Arrange chops and remaining apple rings over precooked sweet
potatoes and apples; baste with pan juices and dot with remaining
margarine.
10. Bake 30 minutes longer, or until done.

The History of Recipes
We can follow the history of written recipes way back into the distant past, at least as far back as early Egypt, and potentially, even further back. In practice though, these, ancient records were just primitive hieroglyphic or cunieform recipes for preparing meals.
In fact, the oldest recipe found, according to academics are a few tablets in ancient Sumerian describing the preparation of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as having made people feel exhilarated and blissful. Later on, we find a couple of cookery books which were published in the 1300s ; a cookery book published under the title `Forme of Cury`, and another, similary entitled `Curye on Inglish`. Although the titles sound familiar, they are nothing to do with the indian curry that is served today, but instead accounts of the types of meals on the menues of the upper classes of that period. Later on in the 1400s, people returning from the crusades brought back a variety of foods and spices from the East, including spices such as parsley and basil. The introduction of these new herbs and spices was responsible for a surge in books on cookery, some of which are now in private libraries. For the next few years, the powerful and wealthy competed to lay on the most extravagent meals, and as a result chefs and their recipe collections were at a premium. Even so, it was during the 1800s that fine cooking and recipe publications rose to prominence. Mrs Isabella Beeton in the UK, and the equally well-known Fannie Farmer in the US, dedicated years of their lives to assembling, testing, and writing down recipes common in their social group. The introduction of the TV gave us TV cooks and the demand for the accompanying recipe books. Which pretty much brings us to the present day and the internet revolution, permitting us all to search through thousands of recipes just like those on this site. |
