The History of Recipes
Experts have traced the existence of recipes way back into the distant past, in fact as far back into history as the Egypt of the Pharoahs, and possibly even further. In practice though, generally, these ancient cookbooks were just simple pictorial recipes for preparing meals.
The truth of the matter is, the most ancient recipe discovered, according to Professor Solomon Katz, is a collection of stone tablets in ancient Sumerian which show the making of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as having made anyone who tried it feel blissful and exhilarated. Later on, in The time of the roman empire around 25BC a roman called Apicius compiled a number of documents showing how to cook the recipes prepared by wealthy Romans. In his scrolls, Apicius describes how the roman meals were separated into hors d`oeuvres, main course and desserts, a style of dining still practiced today. Additionally, he tells us how the cooks of his times made use of many spices and herbs, including a few that will be familiar to modern chefs for example basil, mint and parsley. Later, in the fifteenth century, people returning from the crusades brought us many new foods and spices from the holy lands, including coriander, parsley, and basil. These new spices and herbs caused an increase in books on cookery, many of which are now in private cookery archives. By the time we get to the 1900s, cookery books were starting to become popular as a result of better eduction, people having more leisure time and being a little richer. The arrival of television brings us celebrity TV chefs and the demand for the spin-off recipe books. Which pretty much brings us up to date and the invention of computers and the internet, allowing everyone to search through massive numbers of recipes like the ones you can find on this site. |
