The History of Recipes
Recipes as a concept can be observed far back into the distant past, in truth as far back into recorded history as the early Egyptians, and possibly even further than that. However, generally, these early records were just very simple hieroglyphic or cunieform instructions for meal preparation.
Fascinatingly, the most ancient recipe found, according to academics are a few ancient tablets in ancient Sumerian which show the preparation of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as having made those who drank it feel exhilarated. As our culinary historical trip moves to more modern times there were two interesting cookery books dating from the 14th Century - a cookery book published under the title `Forme of Cury`, and another entitled `Curye on Inglish`. Surprisingly, they are not about the curry that appears on menues today, but rather accounts of the types of meals eaten by the rich and wealthy people of that time. During the next few centuries, the wealthy families of Europe strove to lay on the most extravagent meals, and as a result the best cooks and their recipes could command a high salary. Nevertheless, it wasn`t until the 1800s that cooking and recipe publications rose to prominence. Mrs Isabella Beeton in the UK, and Fannie Merritt Farmer in the US, dedicated years of their lives to assembling, verifying, and writing down recipes of the day. By the advent of the 20th century, recipe books were starting to become popular mostly as a result of increased literacy, people having more spare time and having more money to spend. |
