The History of Recipes
It is possible to follow the history of `recipes` far back into ancient history, in fact as far back into recorded history as the Egypt of the Pharoahs, and possibly even further than that. Having said that, mostly, these ancient records were just very basic hieroglyphic or cunieform instructions for preparing meals.
In fact, the most ancient recipe found, according to historians are a few tablets in ancient Sumerian describing the making of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as making those who drank it feel `blissful`. Later, there were a couple of books published in the 14th Century ; one book published under the title `Forme of Cury`, and another, similary entitled `Curye on Inglish`. Don`t be fooled by the titles though, these two books have no connection with the spicy food that appears on menues today, but rather recipes for the types of food on the menues of the rich. For the decades that followed, the upper classes strove to lay on the most extravagent banquests, and as a result cooks and their recipe collections were greatly in demand. Notwithstanding that, it was during the 19th century the formal cooking and recipe publications became really popular. The Famous Mrs Beeton in the UK, and Fannie Merritt Farmer in the US, dedicated their lives to collecting, trying out, and recording recipes that were common in the better off homes of the day. By the time we get to the 20th century, cookery books are starting to become popular as a result of increased literacy, people having more free time and having more money. The arrival of television gave us celebrity TV chefs and the demand for the spin-off recipe books. And that brings us to the present day and the invention of computers and the internet, allowing everyone to search through thousands of recipes such as those found on sites such as the one you are reading now. |
