The History of Recipes
It is quite feasible to track the history of transcribed cooking instructions way back into antiquity, in truth as far back as the Egyptians, and maybe further still. In practice though, sadly, these early cookbooks were just basic pictorial instructions for meal preparation.
Interestingly, the most ancient recipe in existence, according to experts in ancient history is a collection of tablets in ancient Sumerian describing the preparation of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as making those who drank it feel exhilarated and blissful. Progressing into The time of the romans around 25BC a roman called Apicius compiled a few scripts which described recipes cooked by the Romans. He tells us how the meals of wealthy Romans were divided into hors d`oeuvres, main meal and desserts, known in latin as `Gustatio, Primae Mensae and Secundae Mensae`. He also informs us how the ancient cooks used many herbs, including a few that will be familiar to modern cooks for example basil, rue and parsley. Later, in the 15th century, people returning from the crusades brought us many new foods, spices and herbs from Arab cooking, including coriander, parsley, basil and rosemary. These new culinary innovations caused an eruption in books on cooking, the majority of which still exist in private collections. Like it or not, the introduction of TV brings us celebrity TV chefs and the spin-off recipe books. And that pretty much brings us to the present day and the invention of the internet, allowing everyone to search through thousands of recipes like the ones you can find on the site you are now reading. |
