The History of Recipes
Transcribed cooking instructions as an idea can be found far back into distant history, in truth as far back into recorded history as the Egyptians, and maybe even further. Interesting though that maybe, in the main part, these ancient cook books were just simple hieroglyphic instructions for preparing meals.
Fascinatingly, the oldest recipe discovered so far, according to academics is a collection of ancient tablets in the Sumerian language which show the baking of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as having made anyone who tried it feel wonderful and blissful. During the time of the Roman Empire a roman called Apicius wrote a number of scripts describing recipes cooked by wealthy Romans. In his works, Apicius tells us how the roman meals were divided into hors d`oeuvres, main course and dessert, something we still use today. Aspicius also recounts how the Romans were skilled in the use of many different aromatic flavours, including some that we all recognise like basil, mint and dill. Over the following few hundred years, the powerful and rich houses competed with each other to serve the best banquets, and because of this the best cooks and their recipes were much in demand. Even so, it wasn`t until the nineteenth century that haute cuisine and recipe collections became really popular. Mrs Isabella Beeton in the UK, and the equally well-known Fannie Merritt Farmer in the US, devoted much of their lives to collating, trying out, and writing down recipes to allow everyone to enjoy them. By the arrival of the 20th century, cook books were in high demand, due to higher levels of literacy, people having increased free time and having more disposable income. The TV revolution brought us cooking programs and the demand for the accompanying recipe books. And that neatly brings us to the present day and the invention of computers and the internet, permitting everybody to access thousands of recipes such as those found on this recipe site. |
