The History of Recipes
Recipes as an idea can be found back into the far past, at least as far back as ancient Egypt, and potentially, even further back. Interesting though that is, sadly, these ancient recipes were just basic pictorial, hieroglyphic or cunieform instructions for meal preparation.
In an interesting twist, the oldest recipe found, according to experts in ancient history are some clay tablets in Sumerian which describe the baking of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as making anyone who tried it feel exhilarated. Moving our culinary historical trip onwards, we have two recipe books which date from the fourteenth century : a book titled `Forme of Cury`, and another, similary titled `Curye on Inglish`. The titles are somewhat misleading tho`, these are unconnected to the indian curry that is popular today, but rather accounts of the types of meals eaten by the nobility of the time. Over the succeeding few centuries, the rich families of Wesstern Europe competed to serve up the most exotic meals, and as a result the best chefs and their collection of recipes could command a high salary. However, it wasn`t until the nineteenth century that cookery and recipe collections really came of age. Mrs Isabella Beeton in the UK, and the equally well-known Fannie Farmer in the US, spent years to assembling, trying out, and writing down the recipes of their peers. When we get to the 20th century, cooking publications are highly popular mostly due to increased literacy, people having increased leisure time and a general increase in wealth. The TV revolution brings us TV cooks and the recipe books that accompanied them. Which pretty much brings us to the present day and the internet revolution, permitting everyone to access massive numbers of recipes just like those on sites such as this. |
