The History of Recipes
Recipes as an idea can be traced way back into the far past, in truth as far as the ancient Egyptians, and maybe further still. Interesting though that maybe, sadly, these old records were just very basic pictorial recipes for preparing food.
Progressing into The time of the romans 25BC a roman called Apicius assembled a collection of documents which described recipes enjoyed by wealthy Romans. In his publication, he tells us how the roman meals were separated into starters, entrees and dessert, something that is very familiar to us today. Aspicius also informs us how the cooks of Roman times were skilled in the use of a good variety of aromatic flavours, including a few you will know like bay, rue and asafoetida. In the 15th century, knights returning from the crusades brought back many new spices and herbs from Arab countries, including spices such as coriander, basil and rosemary. The introduction of these new culinary ideas led to an outbreak in manuscripts on food, some of which still exist in private collections. The introduction of television brings us celebrity chefs and the accompanying recipe books. Which pretty much brings us to the present day and the invention of the internet, allowing everybody to access massive numbers of recipes such as those found on our site. |
We hope you enjoy this Preserved Kumquats (Mom) recipe.
