The History of Recipes
Historians have proved the existence of recipes way back into history, in fact as far into history as pharonic Egypt, and quite possibly further than that. Interesting though that is, sadly, these early cookbooks were just very basic pictorial instructions for food preparation.
Progressing into Roman times 25BC a roman called Apicius created a few scripts describing recipes prepared by wealthy roman citizens. In his publication, he tells us how the roman meals were separated into starters, main meal and dessert, known in latin as `Gustatio, Primae Mensae and Secundae Mensae`. Additionally, he informs us how the cooks of Roman times were skilled in the use of a good variety of spices, including a few you will know for example bay, fennel and dill. Later on, in the 15th century, people returning from the crusades brought us many foods, spices and herbs from Arab cooking, such as parsley and basil. The introduction of these new culinary ideas led to an eruption in publications on food, some of which are kept safe in academic collections. The TV revolution gave us TV cookery programs and the spin-off recipe books. Which pretty much brings us up to date and the invention of the internet, allowing everybody to access massive numbers of recipes such as those found on this recipe site. |
