The History of Recipes
Experts have proved the existence of recipes far back into the distant past, in fact as far back into history as the early Egyptians, and maybe further still. Interesting though that maybe, mostly, these old cook books were just primitive hieroglyphic or cunieform recipes for preparing food.
In fact, the oldest recipe found, according to historians is a series of stone tablets in Sumerian describing the preparation of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as making anyone who tried it feel `blissful`. Later on, in The time of the romans around 25BC a roman called Apicius created a few documents detailing recipes enjoyed by his fellow Romans. In his scrolls, he describes how the meals of wealthy Romans were separated into hors d`oeuvres, entrees and afters, known in latin as `Gustatio, Primae Mensae and Secundae Mensae`. He also tells us how the Roman cooks used many different spices, including many that are still in use today such as basil, rue and parsley. For the decades that followed, the upper classes competed to serve up the most extravagent banquests, and as a result the best chefs and their recipes were much in demand. However, it wasn`t until the 1800s the formal cooking and recipe publications reached a high level of popularity. The Famous Mrs Isabella Beeton in the UK, and the equally well-known Fannie Farmer in the US, devoted their lives to collating, testing, and recording popular recipes of the day. By the time we get to the 20th century, cookbooks were highly popular as a result of increased literacy, people having increased free time and having more money. |
