    Where do I find...

Hello all! Anyone know where to find a decent vegetarian Parmesan? Do any supermarkets stock them? I love a good veggie Cheddar but it just doesn't work on pasta

I like the one that's called something like 'not just a pasta cheese' - you get it in Waitrose. It's not incredibly pungent but seems to do the trick. Sainsbury's also does a vegetarian Parmesan replacement available as a wedge with the packaged cheeses. Or if you have a good cheese shop nearby, then they might have a vegetarian-friendly pecorino, which is superb on pasta.

'Not just a Pasta Cheese' is extremely good, however, I have also found a great little product by a brand called 'Life Free From' who produce a veggie/vegan friendly Parmazano style grated hard cheese.

Try getting a really strong cheddar (one of the ones that has crystals in) and leaving it out of the fridge for a day or so. It gets really hard and the flavour goes more like Parmesan...

I have exactly the same problem. I've heard of Sainsbury's selling veggie parmesan before but I don't think they stock it anymore as I've looked all over my local Sainsbury's superstore, and it certainly isn't existent on their website. :-S I think I'll try Bookham's 'Not Just A Pasta Cheese' (from Waitrose) or givepeasachance's suggestion of dried cheddar.

There's a really nice Irish cheese called Gabriel that is definitely vegetarian and works like Parmesan in recipes. I bought it from a deli in Ireland - does anyone know where I can get in England? (South East ideally, or online). Thanks!

Update - I saw the Bookham's cheese in Waitrose and it now says Vegetarian Pasta Cheese on the packet. Still the same cheese! I bought it and used for a veggie aubergine parmigiana - v nice.
